Remember the solar lilies - small floating solar islands in Glasgow? Swiss Thomas Hinderling develop similar idea. His sunny islands have a radius of 5000 meters and height 20 m. Each of them will generate hundreds of kilowatts of electricity. This electricity will cost about 5 times lower than current levels. The construction of the first trial began in this Island in 2008. It is funded by CSEM and the company will be located in the territorial waters of the United Arab Emirates. Mass production of such equipment is expected to begin in 2011.
The advantages of solar islands are:
- 5 times lower kWh costs of competing systems due to:
- use of extremely cheap panels type EFC.
- The systems do not needed very precise mechanics, the usable area of the facility is 95 percent.
- Low sensitivity to wind .
- Module type - it allows construction of very large platforms .
- Energy can be stored thermal, so that electricity generation may continue at night.
- Additional benefits from the deployment of islands in the sea:
- Can be constructed in Equatorial areas where solar radiation is strongest.
- Water needed to produce hydrogen and cooling in abundance .
- It is possible to combine the process of producing fresh water by simple evaporation .
- If they are located in the international / NoMan`s Land / water can be owned by any nation.
